Lodges and Island Resort Solar Installations - Solar Storage - Climate Change Report 2018

Is this the future we REALLY want?

The question we all beg to ask is, what legacy will we leave our grandchildren with? Will we ensure our  generation is for generations?

As you have probably heard, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recently published their Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C (SR15). The comprehensive report which includes over 6,000 scientific references and was prepared by 91 authors from 40 countries, comes out every 5 – 7 years. In summary, the report states that negative impacts and costs of 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming will be far greater than we had initially expected. Ecosystems and human communities and economies will no longer be as they are today. Some of the effects which we will need to start seeing as a reality include; stronger storms, more erratic weather, dangerous heat waves, rising seas, and large-scale disruption to infrastructure and migration patterns. Which as we all know, will have colossal ramifications on our livelihoods/businesses. For example, the reality may be that a vibrant and lush wine farm may need to revaluate its product offering to prickly pear cactus jams.

We all understand the consequences of climate change to our environment but let’s dive deeper into the socio-economic forecasts for our businesses. When we look at the tourism industry for instance, we understand sustainability plays a major role in the marketability of their resorts and lodges, with recognised sustainable certifications coming into play. In fact, studies show that travellers are increasingly selecting their accommodation based on the low carbon footprint and operations of the resorts & lodges. Travellers are mindful of isolated locations making use of diesel gensets, and 70% of travellers select resorts in remote areas which use solar energy over any other sustainability practice implemented. The tourism industry is a fast adopter, their businesses are made viable through the conservation of eco-systems, so you will see storage is quickly becoming the norm within the sector.

Millennials (born between 1981-1996), believe that the Earth is warming mostly due to human activity and are sensitive to the affect it has on their communities. This 45% increase in awareness over older generations is sure to impact their brand loyalty for a generation which is soon to be many of our clients, if not already. As global warming escalates so does awareness with consumers making concerted efforts to support business that are in line with their values and expectations of climate and corporate responsibility. Money matters and consumers are showing their vote for climate action through researching the sustainability practices of businesses. The concepts of BEE may be applied to “EEE” (Environmental Economic Empowerment). Blockchain technologies are certainly going to disrupt the supply chain model enabling transparency for end-users. Policy makers have already begun putting pressure on nations to reduce emissions with carbon taxes marking the tip of a rapidly melting iceberg!

SPS have been busy with multiple off-grid projects underway for our clients in the tourism industry. Our most recent project on an island lodge just north off the coast of Madagascar, has resulted in a reduction of the lodges annual diesel running hours from  8760 to just 1800. This decrease in their carbon footprint has been massively offset and the marketability of the lodge as an eco-resort is soon to be felt. To view the project, click here. In the next month we will have the island states’  President join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the islands very first solar storage system and in essence, mini-grid… which we shall share in due course (watch this space)!

In closing, we would like to prepare our clients for changes in the energy market… the days of fossil fuelled businesses are dated, and the onus is on us to assist our clients to anticipate regulatory and socio-economic changes that prepare us for the future, no matter your industry…

We hope you join us on our journey to light up Africa with sustainable power solutions…. Whether it’s grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid…
